Isa
40:20 (ESV) He who is too impoverished for an offering
chooses
wood that will not rot;
he
seeks out a skillful craftsman
to set
up an idol that will not move.
NOTE: We still do
foolish things today. The person can't afford an offering, but he can afford
special wood and a skilled craftsman. He sets up an idol that does nothing. It
does not move. You can look at it, but it provides nothing. It is worthless. It
is only for looking at. Any prayers or requests are wasted. And yet, the person
was too poor to do what he should have--given to God what is his due. We are so
foolish. We waster our money on foolishness when the answer is so much closer.
The problem is that we do not want to submit ourselves to God. It is the same
problem Adam and Even had during the rebellion. It is the same problem the
children of Israel had in the wilderness. They only want to follow God on their
terms, not on his terms. And so we choose foolishness over real life and we
wonder why we are so empty.
