Notice on a slight format change:

Except for July 2012, these are mostly a collection of current devotional notes.

July 2012 is a re-write of old quiet times. My second child was born Nov 11, 1987 with multiple birth defects. I've been re-reading my QT notes from that time in my life, and have included them here. They cover the time before the birth and the few years immediately after the birth. They are tagged "historical." I added new insights and labeled them: ((TODAY, dd mmm yy)).

QT 7/4/2025 Gen 1:6-13, It was a GOOD creation

Genesis 1:6–13 (ESV) —

6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

NOTE: The Hebrew word for day is yowm. The word is usually translated 'day,' but can be translated as 'age' or a longer period of time as in Gen 2:4. There is an argument that when there is a number directly associated with the word it means 24 hours. I don't deny anything written in Genesis 1 could be accomplished by an infinite God in a 24-hour period or even one second. But I do think the argument of a number before yowm means 24 hours is a self-licking ice cream cone since it is based on Genesis chapter one, and this chapter alone.

But, it really isn't important how God did it. Jesus created a very good wine out of water in less than an hour, so time is not really an issue for God. Again, the key facts, however it was accomplished, is that God created and at the time, the creation was good. These facts will become more important as we get to the fall and answer the atheist's question of why God doesn't intervene in preventing suffering and calamities.

PONDER:

  1. When was the last time I acknowledge God as the creator?
  2. When was the last time I thanked him for his "good" creation?

PRAYER: Father, I know the creation today is not as you created it in the garden. It is marred. Paul says that the creation groans because of the weight of our sin. We have ruined your good creation. But, the good and the beautiful still shine through, and I thank you for it. I thank you that you wanted us to enjoy your beautiful creation.
