Hebrews 2:10–13 (ESV) —
10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying,
“I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
13 And again,
“I will put my trust in him.”
And again,
“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
NOTE: Constable titled this paragraph "The Son's Solidarity with Humanity." It is hard to think that the Son of God could be made perfect (verse 10), because that would suggest he was less than perfect, and therefore could not be God. But I think the problem is a misunderstanding of the Greek word used for perfect here. The work is teleioo which means to make perfect or complete (Strong's). The corollary first definition (1A) to carry through completely, to accomplish, finish, bring to an end. The second definition is to complete (perfect) with (2A) add what is yet wanting in order to render a thing full. Jesus was perfect already, but to be our savior and our high priest he needed to live as a human. He needed to completely fulfill the requirements for High Priest to offer his own body for our salvation. God had to also become man to complete what was needed to save us. He was perfect before, but he became a complete savior by living among us without sin, and offering his body to die in our place.
The verses that follow verse 10 declare Jesus, the Son of God, one of us. We are brothers. He calls us his children. The Christian has a unique and special place in the kingdom of God. We are heirs and co-heirs with Jesus. We will rule with Jesus on earth. We now share in his righteousness (perfection).
PONDER:
- We need to stop and consider what the son of God did to become one of us, perfectly human in every way, and still God.
PRAYER: Father, these thoughts are hard to comprehend. They seem so impossible. But it is the truth of your word. There is much error in the world today, but your word stands out as truth. Thank you!
