Hebrews 3:1–6 (ESV) —
1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
NOTE: Moses is very important. He carried the entire instruction for the old covenant down the mountain. He knew the plans. He saw the originals. He transmitted all of the laws from God to the people. And God called him faithful as a servant in His house. But Jesus is much different. He too was faithful in God's house, but not as a servant, but as the Son. It is Jesus' house because Jesus is God.
The writer has already made the point that Jesus is greater than any of the angels. Now, he makes the point to his Jewish readers, that Jesus is greater than even Moses. If you are following Moses, you need to be following Jesus. Moses was 'only' a faithful servant, Jesus is the Son of God, and actually God himself (fact of the trinitarian nature of God - God is one and God is three persons).
If you truly want to be a part of God's house, you must follow Jesus. Moses was a great man, but on the mount of transfiguration (Mark 9:1-8), when God declared Jesus was his Son, Moses and Elijah disappeared, leaving only Jesus.
PONDER:
- Am I fully committed to Jesus alone?
- Do I try to please God by living according to rules? Because of what Jesus did on the cross (if you believe), you are fully accepted and loved as a child of God, and there is nothing you can do to increase God's love for you.
- It is good to do good works, but do it out of thankfulness for salvation.
PRAYER: Father, I thank you that because of my faith in Jesus for salvation, and being born again, I am part of your family. I am a child of God only because of my faith in Jesus. We are not children of God by being born. Actually, most people are condemned by their sin. Only our faith saves us and brings us into your family. Thank you, thank you for salvation. Thank you that I am loved completely. Thank you that I am eternally saved.
