Hebrews 1:5–9 (ESV) —
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”?
Or again,
“I will be to him a father,
and he shall be to me a son”?
6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels worship him.”
7 Of the angels he says,
“He makes his angels winds,
and his ministers a flame of fire.”
8 But of the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has anointed you
with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
NOTE: The questions are rhetorical and intended to elevate Jesus above all. No angel was ever called God's son. Only God is worshipped and yet God commands worship of Jesus. The angels serve God, but Jesus reigns on a throne as God. God the father bestows upon God the son all authority. This emphasizes the doctrine of the trinity, well at least two of the persons in the trinity. The trinity is composed of three persons (Father, Son, and Spirit) who are both unique in personhood and totally one in every other aspect of what it means to be God. It is a mind-boggling truth that is beyond our less-than-on-cubic-foot minds. We can't understand and I am not surprised. I would be more surprised if we could understand everything about the infinite God. My granddaughter cannot comprehend quantum mechanics if I were to explain it to her. I am not surprised, but I don't expect her to understand all knowledge in the universe if she was an adult. We should not be surprised by truths about God that we cannot understand, such as foreknowledge, free will, and the trinity.
PONDER:
- Do we understand the wonder of Jesus our Messiah, and the gift that God has given to those who believe?
PRAYER: Father, I can't understand all things but I can understand what was done on the cross for me. I was sealed with your spirit. I have an incredible inheritance. I will get a new. I will reign with you in the millennial kingdom in whatever role you have for me. I am saved from my sin and shame.
