1 Timothy 1:6–7 (ESV) — 6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have
wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be
teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the
things about which they make confident assertions.
NOTE: There are
people who make very confident assertions of the law, but they don't really
understand the law or the purpose of the law. They are dogmatic. They hold to
something without a true understanding of it. So, there is a need for an
insight and there is a need for a holistic view of scripture. One of our rules
as teachers is that scripture interprets scripture and that scripture does not
contradict scripture. If Paul says in another letter that we are not under the
law, and then in the next paragraph in this letter says the law is good, we
need to understand what he means by good and not under the law. They cannot
contradict but must be mutually supportive.
PRAYER: Father, I
pray I would never be overly dogmatic with scripture. Certainly, there are
things which cannot be compromised, but I think that can be used as an excuse
not to investigate things differently. Protect me Lord from my own biases.
