Psalm 24:3–6 (ESV) —
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the Lord
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah
NOTE: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord or stand in his holy place? No one can. We are all unworthy. Everyone's hands are dirty. There is no one with a pure heart. There is no one whose heart has not been drawn to what is false. There is no one who has not sworn deceitfully. Paul, quoting another OT passage in Romans says, "there is no one who does good, not even one." That is the problem with all religion -- works will not earn you heaven. Comparing yourself to others will not earn you heaven. The only thing that could earn heaven is perfection, and we are not perfect; we are not holy. So is there no hope? If you seek him you will find him. If you seek Jesus, the man-God, you will find our substitutionary atonement. Jesus died in our place, and took our sins on himself, and gave us his righteousness -- his perfection. That is the ONLY way onto the hill of the Lord. That is the ONLY way to stand in his holy place. Jesus himself said, "I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but through me." Jesus is the only way.
PONDER:
- Do I understand the ramifications of Jesus as the only way? There is no salvation in Buddha or Hinduism or Islam or any other religious ideal. There is no good, even sacrificing your body, that can earn salvation.
PRAYER: Father, I pray that as Christians we would not shrink back from telling the truth, even to our brothers in Christ who are often mistaken on this point. There is no other way of salvation outside of Jesus. There are not multiple ways. If Jesus is God, then his words are true. If he is not, then he cannot save either. Thank you for the verification of salvation that lives within my heart.
