Luke 1:16–17 (ESV) — 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to
the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of
Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient
to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”
NOTE: I had not
noticed the connection between verses 16
and 17. In verse 16, the angel tells Zechariah what John will do -- turn the
Israelites back to their God. In verse 17, Luke says John will go before him.
Who is the him? God is the him. Now, it could be that Luke is not referring to
the person of Jesus, but rather the larger presence of God, but the
construction, when read literally, does suggest that John goes before Jesus
(God) to prepare the people for God's coming.
PRAYER: Father, we
know from the gospel of John, the response of the leaders to Jesus' statements,
and the letters of the Apostles that Jesus was God and claimed to be God. I
pray for the lost, that they would understand the futility of their argument that
Jesus was not God. Jesus was God in the flesh, no matter how incredible it
might seem. Therefore, Jesus' words and actions need to be listened to.
