Psalm 1:1–6 (ESV) — 1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
NOTE: Blessed -- I think that is the desire of every believer in Christ, to be blessed by God. Everything else pales in comparison to the blessing of God. Even hard times and attacks can be endured when we are blessed. What is "blessed?" It is an inner sense of acceptance by God, confidence in God, peace from God, and joy in knowing God. Financially, it may mean nothing, although many saints have enjoyed both abundance and want. Ultimately, it is that hole in our soul that has been healed and closed. There are three necessary conditions. One, we don't walk in the counsel of the wicked. This is the culture's worldview of how one should live life and it is in opposition to God. Two, we don't stand in the way of sinners. We don't take pride in sin. We don't exalt our sin but we recognize our shame at disobeying the commands of our creator. Third, we don't sit with scoffers. This is the worst of the three and seems to leave some question as to whether the individual even believes if the person scoffs at truth. It is okay to question. It is even good. But scoffing is different -- it denies without truly knowing or wanting to know truth.
PONDER:
- What is my intake? What do I listen to? Where do I develop my philosophy of life, from the world or from God's word?
PRAYER: Father, I pray we could experience your blessing. I pray we would wash our souls in the word of God and allow it to penetrate deeply and change who we are. Protect us from the world and its lies.
